Waterproofing cost

Basement waterproofing costs, and how to tell which fix your basement needs

A wet basement can be a gutter problem, a crack problem or a groundwater problem, and the prices for each are miles apart. Here are the ranges and a way to work out which one you are dealing with.

Basement floor opened along the wall with a trench holding perforated drain pipe in washed gravel, a dimpled membrane against the block wall

Bowling Green gets close to 50 inches of precipitation in an average year, and May is usually the wettest month at about five and a half inches. In April 2025 the city saw more than ten inches in about four days. Clay holds that water against basement walls long after the rain stops, which is why so many basements here weep in spring and dry out by fall.

Published price ranges

MethodRangeNotes
Basement waterproofing, whole job$3,000 – $10,000Fixr; around $5,000 is typical
Interior perimeter drain, per linear foot$40 – $120Fixr; trench along the walls to a sump
Exterior French drain, per linear foot$10 – $100Fixr; depth and access drive the spread
Sump pump installation$600 – $2,500Fixr; battery backup adds
Epoxy crack injection, per crack$250 – $1,000Fixr

To see how per-foot pricing adds up: a 30-by-40-foot basement has 140 feet of wall. A full interior drain at $40 to $120 a foot would run about $5,600 to $16,800, which is why many jobs only drain the one or two walls where water actually comes in.

Where the water goes matters here

Bowling Green relies on drainage wells and improved sinkholes to send its own stormwater into the caves below, and the city has an Illicit Discharge Ordinance about what goes into them. If a sump discharge or yard drain would end up near a drainage well or sinkhole, talk to Public Works before tying into anything. We route discharge to daylight away from the house unless the city says otherwise.

Cheapest fixes first

Gutters and downspouts cost a fraction of any drain system, and they fix more Bowling Green basements than people expect. A good plan tries those first where the evidence points to them, and puts drains in where they are truly needed.

What a fair waterproofing quote includes

A quote should name where the water is entering, the method for each wall, the linear feet of drain, the sump and discharge route, whether a battery backup is included, and how the concrete floor will be patched. It should also say what happens to the basement during the work: furniture moved, dust controlled, debris hauled away. If finished walls have to come down to reach the problem, that should be on paper too.

After the work

Drains and pumps are low maintenance but not no maintenance. Test the sump every few months by pouring a bucket of water into the basin, keep the discharge line clear of leaves and ice, and keep gutters running. A basement that stayed dry through May is the best sign the system is sized right.

Questions readers send us

Are waterproof paints worth trying?

On a basement that only gets damp, a coating can help a little. On one that takes water under pressure, paint will peel and the water will keep coming.

Interior or exterior drain: which is better?

Exterior drains stop water before it reaches the wall but mean digging around the house. Interior drains relieve pressure and carry water to a sump with far less disruption. Most basements here get interior systems.

Does a sump pump need a backup?

We recommend one. Storms that fill a sump basin are the same storms that knock out power.

Will waterproofing stop a wall from bowing?

No. Drainage lowers the pressure, but a wall that has already moved needs anchors, braces or straps as well.

How long does an interior drain job take?

Usually a few days for a typical basement, depending on how many walls and how the floor breaks out.
